Vancouver port upgrades halve inbound truck transit times
Road and rail improvements at the Fraser Surrey Port Lands have reduced average inbound container truck transit times from more than 30 minutes to around 14 minutes, according to the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.
The Fraser Surrey Port Lands Transportation Improvements Project included the extension of Timberland Road and the creation of a dedicated lane for inbound container trucks. Road and rail crossings were also upgraded to remove transport bottlenecks and improve access to port terminals and other facilities in the area.
Since the new infrastructure opened, average transit times for inbound container trucks have declined from more than 30 minutes to approximately 14 minutes. The result represents a reduction of more than half and is intended to improve the reliability and capacity of the transport network serving the port lands.
The project supports operations at DP World Fraser Surrey, as well as other tenants located within the Fraser Surrey Port Lands. The area has recorded strong cargo growth in recent years, increasing pressure on the road and rail links that connect its terminals.
Bulk export volumes handled through Fraser Surrey have risen by more than 80% since 2021. Container volumes also increased by more than 10% in 2025, highlighting the need for infrastructure capable of supporting higher cargo flows while limiting delays for trucks accessing the terminals.
The port authority delivered the improvement programme with funding support from the Canadian government’s National Trade Corridors Fund. The completed works are designed to increase transport capacity, improve network reliability and reduce congestion associated with road and rail crossings.
By separating inbound container truck traffic and improving critical crossing points, the project addresses access constraints that had contributed to longer journeys through the port lands. The port authority said the upgraded infrastructure would help reduce delays while providing more dependable connections for terminal users and other port tenants.
