Asia LNG Transport (ALT), the joint venture between NYK and MISC Berhad, has signed a long-term time-charter contract with Malaysia LNG for a new liquefied natural gas carrier.

The newbuild vessel will transport LNG to Japan following its delivery, which is scheduled for 2028. It will be built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in China.

Under the charter agreement, the carrier will be deployed in LNG transportation services to Japan, supporting the supply of the fuel to the Japanese market.

The vessel is designed with a cargo tank capacity of 18,700 cubic metres and will be fitted with a dual-fuel diesel-electric propulsion system. Its reported dimensions are approximately 129.8 metres in length and 25.4 metres in beam.

Hironobu Watanabe, NYK Senior Managing Executive Officer, said the parties aimed to provide safe and reliable LNG transportation services through the new charter arrangement.

“We are very pleased to have concluded this charter agreement,” Watanabe said. He added that NYK would work with Malaysia LNG, MISC and other partners to contribute to a stable energy supply to Japan.

ALT’s latest contract links the NYK-MISC joint venture with Malaysia LNG for the long-term deployment of the new vessel once construction is completed. The agreement also sets out the vessel’s role in carrying LNG to Japan after its planned 2028 delivery.
