Höegh Evi and Petroleum Sarawak (PETROS) have entered an agreement to jointly develop, own and operate a proposed LNG import terminal in Kuching, Malaysia.
The partners are targeting first gas from the Kuching LNG Terminal by the end of 2029. The development is intended to supply natural gas for power generation in Kuching and will form part of the wider Kuching Low-Carbon development in Sarawak.
The proposed terminal is planned around a floating storage and regasification unit, supported by mooring infrastructure, subsea and onshore pipelines, and onshore receiving facilities.
In addition to regasification services, the project is expected to provide small-scale LNG distribution, truck-loading capabilities, LNG bunkering, storage and reloading services.
The companies said they are assessing ways to accelerate delivery of the terminal in response to growing demand.
Höegh Evi chief executive Erik Nyheim said the partnership with PETROS builds on the company's experience in delivering floating LNG infrastructure projects. He said the company aims to support Sarawak's infrastructure needs and longer-term regional growth.
PETROS is the master developer of the broader Kuching Low-Carbon development. Alongside the terminal plans, Höegh Evi and PETROS intend to explore knowledge-sharing, training and skills-development initiatives connected with the project.
