Corvus Energy has introduced Blue Whale NxtGen Power, a lithium iron phosphate energy storage system developed in cooperation with BYD Energy Storage.
The system is the first commercial product resulting from the companies’ strategic collaboration, which began with a memorandum of understanding signed in December 2025. Corvus Energy and BYD Energy Storage subsequently signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement in May 2026, establishing a framework to jointly develop marine battery systems based on high-rate LFP technology.
Context: Port congestion and container freight rates
Under the partnership, BYD Energy Storage provides the battery cell technology and manufactures the cell stacks. Corvus Energy is responsible for the overall system design and architecture, including marine safety features, the battery management system, cybersecurity provisions, a digital battery passport and class approval. Corvus will also undertake final assembly and testing and provide service support throughout the system’s lifetime.

Operational context
Blue Whale NxtGen Power is based on Corvus Energy’s NxtGen platform. It shares several core components and design elements with other products in the company’s NxtGen portfolio, including the stack interface, battery module design, battery management system and cell string assembly.
According to Corvus, the common platform is intended to simplify installation and maintenance while allowing spare parts to be shared across multiple products. For operators already using Blue Whale NxtGen systems, installation methods, service procedures and spare-parts management are expected to remain largely unchanged. This is designed to limit additional training needs and reduce operational complexity.
The new system is intended for vessel applications where power demand is the main performance requirement rather than total energy capacity. Target applications include tugs and workboats, offshore vessels using batteries to optimise power use, and large ferries that need rapid charging between crossings.
Corvus Energy and BYD Energy Storage will present Blue Whale NxtGen Power alongside Corvus’ wider LFP product portfolio at the SMM maritime exhibition in Hamburg. The presentation is scheduled for September 2 at 12:00 at the Corvus Energy stand in Hall B6, Stand 429.
The session will address the companies’ latest developments, the role of LFP chemistry in marine applications and its performance across different vessel operating profiles. Corvus also plans to outline further products it intends to bring to the market.
