Iran is drawing up a list of conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz after mediators requested that Tehran set out its requirements, according to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

Speaking through an interpreter in an interview with Al Manar TV, Rezaei said an end to the regional war was among Iran’s conditions. He also said Iran and Oman had agreed on a shipping corridor through the strait, with sections of the route passing through Omani and Iranian waters.

Under the proposed arrangement, vessels would travel through a designated central channel if the United States met Tehran’s conditions, Rezaei said. However, a senior source said Iran and Oman were still working on the details of an agreement covering the strategic waterway.

The discussions followed an announcement by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards that the two countries had reached an understanding on sharing control of the strait and its revenues. The source indicated that the practical terms had not yet been finalised.

A Revolutionary Guards spokesperson said Iran would not permit the waterway to reopen unless Washington lifted what Tehran describes as a blockade of Iranian ports. The spokesperson also called for compensation to be paid and sanctions to be removed.

The Strait of Hormuz was a major route for global energy transportation before the war began in February, carrying roughly one-fifth of worldwide oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Maritime traffic through the waterway has largely stopped since the conflict began.

Ceasefire agreements announced by Washington and Tehran in April and June were intended to support the restoration of shipping through the strait, but neither agreement held.

The latest statements indicate that any resumption of regular maritime traffic remains tied to wider political, security and sanctions-related negotiations. While Iran and Oman have discussed the structure of a possible corridor, the source material does not specify a timetable for completing the agreement or reopening the waterway.
